Spectacled Amazon (Red)

The Red-Spectacled Amazon (Amazona pretrei) is a gorgeous South American parrot that is native to southern Brazil. It grows to a length of around 32 cm (13 inches). It is easily identified by its generally green plumage, red patterns around the forehead and eyes, characteristic white eye rings and multicoloured wing feathers.

These parrots are recognised for their vibrant personality, intellect and ability to mimic sounds. Like other Amazon parrots, they need daily interaction, mental stimulation and a caring environment.

Amazon parrots are known to be vocal and at times demanding, so a peaceful home environment, steady routine and positive training can go a long way.

Saving this beautiful species.

Habitat loss is a threat to the Red-Spectacled Amazon, especially from degradation of its native Araucaria forest. Historically the species had a wider distribution than at present. Responsible and legal ownership, as well as support for credible conservation efforts, can help to keep these amazing birds around for years to come.
