The White-Fronted Amazon is a little but very striking parrot, measuring around 25 cm (9.8 inches) in length. Though the smallest of the species of Amazon parrots, it certainly makes up for its size with its brilliant colours, spirited nature and striking look.

One of its most distinguishing traits is a bright white patch on the forehead, which lends the species its name. Each parrot is a little different, because this patch can vary in size from bird to bird .

It’s coated with gorgeous green feathers on its body to give the characteristic look of amazon parrots. When it spreads its wings you can see splashes of blue in among the feathers adding even more colour to the image.

Many White-Fronted Amazons have stunning red markings around the eyes that might nearly look like a pair of glasses. Behind the white forehead patch, there’s a further hint of blue that adds to the face’s distinctiveness.

How To Distinguish Males and Females

A neat aspect of the White-Fronted Amazon is that the men and females are usually distinguishable by their appearance. It’s one of the few Amazon species (the others being the Red-Spectacled Amazon and Yellow-Lored Amazon) where the differences between the sexes are so obvious.

Adult males normally have vivid red shoulder feathers, females generally have green shoulder feathers. This inherent distinction makes it easier for experienced birders to differentiate them.

Juvenile white-fronted amazons are a little different from adults. Juveniles typically have pale grey eyes, less red colouration around the face, and a smaller yellowish forehead patch, compared to the large white marking of older birds.

A Singular Amazon Parrot

While smaller, the White-Fronted Amazon has the charm and character that bird lovers enjoy in Amazon parrots. The bird’s bright plumage, expressive face and special traits make it a good choice for someone interested in exotic companion birds.

If you are considering bringing one into your house, learning about its food, social needs, housing requirements and long-term care is a crucial first step to ensuring a healthy and happy environment.
